Yoi, which means "good" in Japanese, launched in Bay Area independent grocers this month with its Probiotic Nut & Seedmilks line. Yoi beverages are crafted in small batches from organic ingredients including almonds, coconut and pumpkin seeds. In creating the company, co-founders Ellie Wells and Tosh Nakagawa were inspired by the ancient art of Japanese fermentation and the concept of ikigai, which means “your reason for being,” the company says. Finding their shared ikigai after working together in the dairy industry for more than a decade, Wells and Nakagawa found themselves and their families moving to a primarily plant-based diet. The 10-ounce bottle is offered in Strawberry, Vanilla Bean, Pineapple and Cacao Nib flavors for $4.99. Yoi also is available in a large 23-ounce bottle in Plain Unsweetened and Vanilla Bean for $8.99.
