EMSUR USA, a division of the Grupo Lantero, unveiled a new environmentally conscious innovation: the Compostable Barrier Bag. The flexible packaging solution maintains the freshness of food and was created to respond to customers’ demands for a two- or three-layer barrier bag that offers compostable characteristics, the company says. The materials used to manufacture the bag have a certificate of compostability based on UNE-EN 13432. The laminar structure, specially designed for the coffee market, can be applied to different value-added categories such as dry food, snacks and confectionery. The barrier bag can be used for rotogravure and flexographic printing and the bag’s high-performance triplex structure uses adhesives and specialty inks, which also are compostable. For added design and functional appeal, the bag can be transparent, opaque or color-printed, in a gloss or matte finish, with a wide range of visual and sensory effects to enhance product differentiation. In addition to its sustainability, the main advantage of the new packaging is its highly regarded barrier properties compared with other compostable plastics, it says. For example, the coffee bag features a compostable rigid capsule that also can have a compostable lid, providing a total environmentally sustainable solution for products requiring natural or organic positioning.
