Beam Inc. launched Hornitos Black Barrel, which is 100 percent blue agave tequila that is triple-aged using an innovative process that conveys the tasting notes of whiskey, the company says. The spirit is first aged for 12 months in American oak barrels before transitioning into deep-charred American oak barrels for four months. Finally, the liquid is transferred to specially toasted American oak barrels for two more months to enhance the whiskey-like notes of the beverage, the company says. As a result, the spirit features notes of oaky vanilla; peppery spiciness; smoky oak; and sweet, smooth agave to appeal to both whiskey and tequila drinkers, it adds. A 750-ml bottle contains 45 percent alcohol by volume and retails for approximately $29.99.
