Westchester, Ill.-based Ingredion Inc. announced that Health Canada approved its Nutraflora prebiotic fiber as a dietary fiber source in food products as permitted by the Food and Drug Regulations. This recent approval is a part of Health Canada’s revised “Fibre Policy for Labelling and Advertising of Dietary Fibre-Containing Food Products,” which was introduced in February 2012.

Evolva Holding SA, Reinach, Switzerland, entered into an agreement with Minneapolis-based Cargill to jointly develop and commercialize fermentation-derived steviol glycosides. Cargill will be responsible for commercialization and has agreed to make an approximately $5.3 million equity investment in Evolva. Additionally, Evolva stands to receive up to $7.5 million in milestone payments and has the right to a 45 percent participation in the final business. If Evolva decides not to exercise this option, it will receive royalty payments from global sales of the co-developed steviol glycoside product. These royalties will scale from mid single-digit to low double-digit percentages as a function of sales volume and other parameters.

The Organic Center, Washington, D.C., named Jessica Shade to its newly created position of director of science programs. In this new role, Shade will manage ongoing science programs and related communicated activities for the non-profit affiliate science center housed in its Washington, D.C., office.

Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM), Decatur, Ill., promoted Christopher M. Cuddy to the newly created role of president of sweeteners and starches in the company’s corn business unit. In his new role, Cuddy will manage all business development, sales, marketing and distribution activities for the company’s sweeteners and starches product portfolio, which encompasses a wide range of ingredients including corn syrups, sugar, sorbitol, dextrose and maltodextrin, as well as Fibersol.

Burcon NutraScience Corp., Vancouver, British Columbia, has received a notice of allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a patent application covering a process for the production of Clarisoy soy protein. Clarisoy is under license to ADM for worldwide production, distribution and sale.
